Why focus on a school in Cite Soleil?
Cite Soleil is considered to be the poorest slum in the northern hemisphere.
History of Cite Soleil
The Cite Soleil neighborhood was originally designated to house manual laborers for a local Export Processing Zone. The area quickly became home to squatters from around the countryside looking for work in the factories.
In 1991, after a coup d’etat, the U.S. led a boycott of Haitian products which resulted in the closing of the export factories. Residents of Cite Soleil were soon thrust into extreme poverty, persistent unemployment and high rates of illiteracy.
Current Situation
- Cite Soleil has approximately 400,000 residents living in an area of eight square miles.
- A majority of the residents are children who live in extreme poverty and experience a high rate of illiteracy.
- There are no sewers, few stores, and little to no electricity. 10,000 U.N. troops patrol the streets of Cite Soleil and Port Au Prince due to the effects of civil strife and oppression.
